Winning fans with enigmatic videos and music about youth and all its feelings, VERIVERY debuted on January 9, 2019, with the mini-album Veri-Us and the title song Ring Ring Ring.
Managed by Jellyfish Entertainment, the septet consists of DONGHEON, HOYOUNG, MINCHAN, GYEHYEON, YEONHO, YONGSEUNG, and KANGMIN. On April 25, the group released their first full album, SERIES ‘O’ [ROUND 3: WHOLE], along with the title track and music video for Undercover.
The album has 12 tracks (some written by the members and a bonus track exclusive for the CD version), and brings a lot of new music, synchronized choreography, and expectations.
In an interview with KoreaIN, the members discussed their new album, what they learned, and the challenges of making it.
Check the full interview below.
KoreaIN: Hello, VERIVERY! Thank you for having us. How have you been lately?
VERIVERY: We’ve been preparing a lot for our comeback with our first full album, SERIES ‘O’ [ROUND 3: WHOLE].
KoreaIN: You’ve just released the MV for ‘O’ and you showed the instability of youth and its moments of fear and doubts. How does it feel to portray so many feelings in one single video and how do you feel seeing the result?
DONGHEON: While filming ‘O’, we were able to show a lot of new sides of us to the point where not only me, but members thought “This is a side that we also have”. I think we felt emotions that we didn’t know and also how to express them among ourselves. We all spent our youth together, but I don’t think we were able to be completely honest with each other back then. Through this music video, I was able to get a glimpse of the members’ emotions and concerns.
HOYOUNG: It was hard to show a lot of emotions while filming the music video, but I’m so happy that the final result was better than I thought.
MINCHAN: We filmed our scenes separately, so we just had to be true to our emotions then, but I liked it because it was more colorful when I watched the video combined at once!
GYEHYEON: I was worried if I could express the emotions well, but I’m proud that it’s captured well in the video. I hope many people can relate to it.
YEONHO: In fact, it’s not easy to show your emotions and act. However, I think it’s easier to express and act when you’re immersed in the director’s advice. And when I look at the results, I feel proud and also that I’ve grown a lot.
YONGSEUNG: Since we had to express various emotions, deep acting was inevitable. I did a lot of research and it was a new challenge for me. I’m happy that the results came out well.
KANGMIN: I wonder what people would think while watching this. I was able to relate to our music video, so I wanted to share a lot of sympathy and comfort with other people.
KoreaIN: Congratulations on the recording and releasing of your first full album. Can you guys talk a little more about your expectations and the creative process of ROUND 3: WHOLE?
VERIVERY: As it’s our first full-length album, we put a lot of effort and lots of songs into it. So we’re looking forward to showing many of these songs and performing them differently. As much as there are lots of songs that the fans will like, we’re looking forward to the fans’ reactions.
KoreaIN: The VERIVERY Universe has been giving more than MVs, but movies about the fight against fear and lonesome. How much of this is portrayed on your title track Undercover?
VERIVERY: Our title song Undercover expresses the process of chasing each other and eventually becoming one. It means that there is victory and defeat at the end of the fight in the ‘dark’, but we still have to coexist, so I think it fits the concept of “Final Battle.”
KoreaIN: VERIVERY has many songs with nice beats, but you also explore other sounds. Is there any music genre you would like to try in the future?
VERIVERY: We are continuing to try various genres, so we want to try Pop Punk or Rock. And we want to try the acoustic-based of the Rock or some band-style music.
KoreaIN:Thank you so much for dedicating your time to this interview! It is an honor to talk and get to know more about VERIVERY and each member individually. Lastly, could you send a message to all of VERRER reading this?
VERIVERY: VERRERs who are reading this interview to KoreaIN, we’re finally making a comeback with our first full-length album. Please show a lot of interest and love for our first full-length album. I hope we can meet in person soon! I love you 💜
